Macy's lured me with coupons into buying this ridiculously gaudy G-Shock

Casio has been making metal G-Shocks for a while now, and while I haven’t been in a huge rush to buy one, I find them interesting because they’re super polished. Macy’s had a 20% off coupon that I stacked with 12% RetailMeNot cashback to save $68 off the slightly ridiculous (for a digital watch) $230 price. It’s so stupid and gaudy and idiotic and I love it.

When I told my wife of this impulse purchase, she said, “hey let me wrap that up and give it to you for your birthday because I never know what to get you.” I suppose I can wait a couple weeks to open it if her “giving” it to me will make her happy. Gotta find happiness where you can during covid.

Macy’s? WTF is Macy’s? Didn’t they die off in the Huge Bezos Meteor Shower of 2017 that sent a cloud of nuclear winter choking debris over Brick-and-Mortar?

That’s for when you really want to be aware that you are wearing a watch, looks like it weighs 20 lbs

Big fan of G-Shock watches, but I don’t know if I could pull off that level of flashiness. Plus, I usually save my G-Shocks for situations where I actually need a timepiece that can take a beating. Not sure what the gold would look like after a few trips of climbing, hiking, kayaking, etc.

But still, pretty darn cool!

Related, I really want the B5000 model. But how the hell do I justify spending $1,700 on a Casio watch, even if it is made of titanium?

I believe i had the same model (not in gold metal obviously) as a kid ( a long time ago, in a far away galaxy ), i definitely think it’s not worth the price even with the rebate but if you like it, then it’s all good :)

Anyway, why is there half a Citroë n logo on this :

I have another G-Shock 6900 that's shiny white and solar powered. These aren't "worth" it but I like em. I can't be bothered to deal with fancy mechanical watches and there are so many wacky G-Shock options.

The metal part is just an outer shell. It weighs more than the plastic versions but it’s still not too heavy. There was another video on it where the guy weighed plastic versions as 62, 67 and 69 grams while the metal one was 120-something. Yeah that’s more but the plastic ones are really light so this is maybe into normal watch territory. But the inside has a lot of plastic to it and the band is too so it's not that heavy.

I have a beater Timex Ironman if I really need something I don’t care about getting trashed. Otherwise G-Shocks for me are like fun kickaround watches that I like to be kinda flashy just for their own sake. I could see trying to wear this in a work setting if I ever find myself back in an office. Fancy mechanical watches that require a winder don't interest me at all. I stick to things that are fun and easy to live with.

Definately has a substantial, hefty look too it though, looks solid

Not quite yet. But they’re struggling. They had big layoffs earlier this year even before COVID hit.

My everyday watch for the last two years has been a TicWatch Pro, because I have now become spoiled by having a smartwatch.

But I do still have two other G-Shocks for outdoor activities, a Skagen analog for formal occasions, an Invicta diver watch for business casual affairs, and a couple other assorted cheap devices as backups . I’m with you one not feeling a strong desire for an overly intricate mechanical watches. I thoroughly respect the craftsmanship, but they aren’t for me.

Very cool! A bit to flashy for me, I think....I’m still using the same Timex Ironman Triathlon I’ve had since forever....it takes a licking and keeps on...well, not ticking, as it’s digital...but you get the idea :P

Yeah, clearly my comment was supposed to be rhetorical. Here in Our Fair City of Santa Barbara, in the Post-Mall-In-The-Downtown-Centre all the “anchor stores” went Teats-Up over the last several years... and that Macy’s store has turned into quite the eyesore.

I jokingly had said that Dollar General would end up with a Superstore in the re , even as The City Fathers contemplated Low Income Housing. For a city that’s pretty arrogant about its station in life, none of those options were considered very palatable.

Of course, in the Ultimate Insult, it was just announced that Amazon would be taking ALL the space and converting it into an Amazon Distribution Center. So, it arises that the most offensive-to-the-city alternative turns out to be the winner.  No Low Income housing.  Just ultra-low-income jobs.

I guess we’re all working for Bezos now.

When I went to a local mall to get my oppohunt Lego, I was surprised to see that it appeared to be thriving. Was also surprised to see that one of the anchor department stores had been replaced by a grocery store, which felt out of place, though I guess there’s no reason why it should be.

Yeah, the rents had always been too high in the Paseo Nuevo Mall to support stores-we-need, but I kinda wish Nordstrom would get off the lease and let a Sprouts or Bristol Farms in there.

Oddly, and this is kinda twisted, with the sheer number of jobs Amazon is likely to create down there? It probably does fulfill the city’s wish to keep that part of Downtown lively... the lunch places probably do OK. But, yeah, a nice grocery store (I’d actually hoped Target would move on the space, but the developers wanted too much in rent) would work down there.

Just not a Dollar Tree.  I hope.

I’ve had the Suunto 7 on my Amazon wish list for a couple months. I personally have a little trouble justifying a $500 watch, but it’s very nice looking and seems to have all the functionality I could want.

Yeah they aren’t cheap but they do a lot, I never had any problems with mine.
